Every Step Counts strides ahead in Swanley

Britain’s longest serving newsreader, Peter Sissons joined new Sevenoaks District Council Chairman, Cllr Pat Bosley, and dozens of residents as the third Every Step Counts wellbeing walking group launched in Swanley on Thursday 17 May.

The Swanley branch is the third of the groups running in the Sevenoaks District with walks also organised in Otford and West Kingsdown.

The new group sets off by the café in Swanley Park every Thursday at 10am.

The walk is completely free and aimed at residents who may never have exercised regularly before or might be living with a long-term condition, be overweight, lack fitness or would like to get out in the fresh air once a week but lack the confidence to go out walking alone.

The Swanley walk is led by three qualified local volunteers, Cllr Lesley Dyball, Melissa Benton-Lavers and Ryan Hayman.

All of the walks are run entirely by volunteers, founded by Cllr Anna Firth, Irene Collins and Jo Kingston.

Lasting around half an hour, with the opportunity to do longer, the walks have grown in popularity since starting in September 2017, with three walking groups drawing in over 60 walkers every week.

Supporting the launch, Peter Sissons says: “I really do congratulate the Every Step Counts team for starting another one of these wonderful walks here in Swanley.

Staying active is the secret to staying healthy.

Having experienced it for myself several times now I know that Every Step Counts is the perfect opportunity to get outside, get moving and make new friends.

I really enjoyed it and I would encourage everybody to give it a go!”

At her first function as the new Council Chairman, Cllr Pat Bosley adds: “I am delighted to launch the third Every Step Counts walk in Swanley. Walking with like-minded people can do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

The fantastic thing about Every Step Counts is that it is open to everyone and there is no pressure.”

Cllr Lesley Dyball, Swanley Every Step Counts walk leader said: “The fact that so many people came to today’s launch shows what a need there is in Swanley for this sort of gentle exercise.

I will be here every Thursday, 10am in Swanley Park next to the Café ready to welcome and help you get started.

Please come, enjoy the great outdoors, get fit and meet new people!”
